Hockey is the newest program at PHHS. It began in the 1977-78 season due to the generation of the people of McMorran Arena, who donated the equipment and ice time for practice and games. Bill Berger and Paul Murray have guided the fortunes of the team for its first two seasons. The Big Reds have just completed their second and most successful season with a 9-5-3 record.
Hockey was dropped after the 1979-80 season and did not return until the 1984-85 school year. Tom Miller took over the fortunes of the program for 7 of the next 9 seasons. His accomplishments were many including 3 Regional Championships in 1988. 1992 and 1993. Some outstanding players included Derek Bunon. Richie Cunningham. Mark Bynam, Larry J. Moeller Jr., Scott Moeller, Eric Huegli, John Keyser. Jamie Bellanger and many others. The team appeared in 2 final 4: 1988 and 1993.
Dave Heino coached the team for two years, 1989 and 1990, compiling a 20-24-2 record.
Greg Wagner took over for Tom Miller after the 1992-93 season. Under Mr. Wagner’s tutelage the teams have compiled a 20-49-2 record. However, they have been to the Regional finals in 2 out of 3 years and with many young players.
1991-1992 Port Huron High Big Reds Hockey Team
Everyone knew their roles and performed them according to plan. From early morning practices to team dinners together, the Big Reds became a very strong team relying on each other to be the very best that they could be.
This team concept worked well for the Big Reds as they rolled to a school record 21 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties. The Big Reds skated through the State Regional and Quarterfinal games by a combined score of 35 goals for and only 5 against.
The group of 10 seniors, 7 juniors and 3 sophomores used solid goal tending and strong defense along with patient and consistent play to throw their competition off game after game. This style of play took them to the State Semi-Finals where the Big Reds lost to eventual state champion, Birmingham Brother Rice,
1-0 in overtime.
For their hard work, dedication to team, and success on the ice the Class “A” semifinalist Big Reds of 1991-1992 rank as one of the best high school hockey teams to come out of Port Huron.
