WRESTLING

Wrestling began as a club sport in 1930 and had about ten members. The club held meetings at the Washington Jr. High School gym with Mr. McLaren as the faculty sponsor. In 1951 Port Huron formed its first team with coach.

Through the years, the wrestling team became very successful. There were some outstanding wrestlers who represented Port Huron High School. One of the best wrestlers who came from the program is, Jack Barden. He won the State Championship, the Big Ten Championship, the N.C.A.A. Championship, the Pan American Wrestling Tournament, and he lost in the finals of the Olympic Tryouts.

The David Chester Award is the City’s Best Wrestler started in the 1966 in honor of Ensign David Arthur Chester, United States Navy Frogman, Demolition Team 22 who died September 8, 1965.
